Chipmunks and other pets

Chipmunk girl and my sighthound Tilli We sighthound owners have used to think only one kind of relationship between sighthounds and squirrels and that's quite a natural as we know how our dogs react when they notice a squirrel in the wild state in a forest. In spite of our prejudice there is no problems to keep chipmunks and sighthounds under the same roof. However, when you let your chipmunks run outside their cage, it's recommended that there is no other pets in same room (at least not cats and dogs with strong hunting instinct). You simply can't trust them, if a chipmunk run pass their eyes.

If your chipmunk is reserved against other animals so that it will rather make a detour in front of other pets, it could be possible to keep also other pets in the same room at the same time. However, if your chipmunk doesn't be afraid of anything like my girls, you shouldn't let them run outside the cage if you have other pets (or very little children) in the room. Chipmunk's nails are very sharp and they have strong desire for taking possession of the highest place. If talking about dogs or other pets, the highest place means generally a head and if you let chipmunk to run over your other pets, their eyes will get into big danger. Once I have had to tear my chipmunks off from my sighthound's face and that was the last time I try to keep my girls in the same room with my other pets.

Cat and a chipmunk cage As a pet owner you have to consider your own situation and decide if it's safe to leave a chipmunk cage and e.g. a dog in the same room when they are not under your control. In general other pets (dogs and cats) get used to a chipmunk cage and soon after few weeks they don't even pay attention to the cage even though the chipmunks in the cage would be running very much. It feels very comical, when some friends come to visit us with their dogs and their dogs can't keep their shirt on, because they go so mad about my chipmunks sitting inside the cage. Then my dog appears to the scene and she looks very surprised because she doesn't understand why the dog guests act like that.

However, you have to remember that a running chipmunk inside the cage is always different thing that a running chipmunk outside the cage. Although my dog don't pay any attention to my chipmunks when they are bustling inside the cage, I never could trust her if I set my chipmunk free.
