Chipmunks out of the cage

Chipmunk running

Shut the windows, take posts off from the door letter-box (if your outddoor has another inner door, close it preferably, too), close toilet pans (close also the toilet room door), take the most valuable plant and other pets out of the room, plug all small holes (for example from the cupboards)... there is lots of considerable things, when you are going to let chipmunks run free outside of their cage. Ha, fine wet earth!!!

They are fast and when you only turn your back on them you will already hear some uproar from the coat-rack of the hall and at the same time you will see flower soil whirling all over around behind the television and video recorder and you know your excavator is at top speed. Or if you come home after a heavy working day, bring something to eat and let your chipmunks free out of their cage, you can be sure that they don't waste their time! Soon a few of your chipmunks have a meal around sandwich and from an other direction you will hear swilling and when you have a look to the direction you will see only bushy tail dangling outside from your drinking-glass.

At the beginning, it might be easier to keep your chipmunks free only in one closed room, because it's easier to look after chipmunks and to remember all the considerable things in a limited and smaller space. Likewise it can be easier to let only one chipmunk run free at a time, because it's easier to look after one running chipmunk than many. Chipmunk climbing in twigs

They are not interested in electric wires and thus you don't have to try to eliminate electric wires from the room where you let chipmunks run free.

It seems to me that it's nearly impossible to keep chipmunks away from the curtains (like also from lovely flower-pots) and so it would be better to use that kind of curtains in the chipmunk's room that chipmunks are allowed to run along them, because if chipmunks find a nice place they do try to come there over and over again (faster and faster) even if you took them off from the place every time.

You have to look after chipmunks always when you let them run free outside they cage, because they are very ingenious and they may invent something exciting which is not so permitted and safe anyway. Still, many times it's very funny to watch the bustles of the chipmunks, because they are so lively, curious and companionable and they will sure entertain their supervisor enough and to spare.

You don't have to be afraid that your chipmunks would fall down from your shoulders or from your head, because they are skilful climbers and they do trust in their nails. The most important thing is only to look at your own feet and rather drag your feet along the floor than walk normally if you want to go somewhere so that no chipmunk would be accidentally run over by your feet.

The easiest way to live with your chipmunks is to make them familiar with the handling of human beings and keep company with them often when they are still very young. If your chipmunks are tamed to handling in their childhood it's not any problem to put them back to their cage when you only want to. Some chipmunks may even leart to come to you by your call. Besides, it's easy to entice naturally extremely curious chipmunks to climb to your shoulders with goodies. In reality, you don't have to call them, because if they notice that you are eating something in the same room there will be sometimes even a real race between chipmunks that who can catch the food first. They do have good sense of smell and above all they are very greedy for goodies. Many times is also difficult to photograph chipmunks, because a camera is very interesting object to chipmunk's mind and easily they come too close to my camera bustling over my camera hand.

Sometimes people have asked in the feedback mail that is it possible to keep chipmunk as a pet in the house without any cage (like dogs or cats). Although chipmunks love to run free and it's good to let them run free around the room regularly, in my opinion you have to have also a large cage for pet chipmunks, because nobody can be always watching chipmunks and pet chipmunks have to be under your control always when you let them run free in your house. Likewise some people has asked me if it's possible to take a chipmunk out for a walk in hamster harness and leash in the summer time. We had some pet hamsters in my childhood, but I had never before heard about hamster harnesses. At all events, it's not possible to use any kind of leashes or harnesses at least with chipmunks - neither inside nor outside the house (neither like any hamster wheels in their cage).
